A new (one-trip) shipping container has made exactly one sea voyage and is virtually as-new, with no notable signs of use. A used container in cargo-worthy or A-grade condition has been in service longer, but is inspected before delivery and guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified. The difference is therefore mainly in price and appearance, not in the quality guarantee.

Buying is usually more cost-effective for long-term or structural use, often from around a year onwards. The container then stays your property, keeps its residual value and you no longer have ongoing monthly charges. For short-term or uncertain projects, the one-off investment is less quickly worth it compared with the flexibility of renting.

Larger sizes such as 40ft cost more, but also offer more loading volume. Transport costs are added separately and depend on distance and accessibility. When buying a shipping container, look out for a valid CSC plate, an inspection report, guaranteed wind and watertightness, and clear warranty and payment terms. Check the coating, doors, seals and floor for damage, and ask whether the container has been inspected before delivery. If in doubt, choose payment after delivery, so you never pay without the container actually being in place.
